Chapter 1: What to remember before you travel

So you’ve booked your Maltese getaway, you’ve organised your flights, and now you’re just counting down the days until you depart for AMP Lost & Found 2022. But before you start packing, you need a travel checklist to help keep this whirlwind preparation stage organised. Lucky for you, we’ve got this essential travel checklist that covers everything from visa and vaccination reminders to itemised packing lists for each stage of your travels. From the day of the festival, to wandering the streets of Velletta.

Organising your passport:

We can’t stress it enough – but your passport is one of the most important things you will be carrying while travelling. More than money, your phone with all your selfies, or even some of your fave festival garms. Without your passport, you won’t be able to leave your home country, and if, heaven forbid you lose it while you’re away – you may not be able to get home until you organise a new or emergency passport.

I feel like we’ve stressed this enough now – so if this is truly ringing in your ears, then check when your passport expires, as some countries will not allow entry with less than 6 months and in some cases 3 months validity remaining.

Websites for passport information:
Country:

United States of America: http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english.html

Canada: http://www.passport.gc.ca/info/

New Zealand: http://www.passports.govt.nz/

United Kingdom / England: https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport

Arrange the following items at least 8 weeks before departure, as travel visas, in particular, can take weeks to receive and some vaccinations may take time to become fully effective.

  • Obtain required travel visas

  • Consider travel insurance to protect yourself (and your stuff)
  • Scan your passport and email it to yourself and a friend
  • Check that your passport has more than 3 free pages and will be valid for up to 6 months prior to your return
  • Visit your doctor and refill prescriptions for any medications you’ll require on the road
  • Let your bank or credit card company know that you will be travelling (however, many banks are changing their policy on this and no longer require you to provide them with this heads-up)

Chapter 2: Getting familiar with Malta

An important component of conquering your first solo-trip, or trip abroad with friends is learning everything you need to know about your impending destination. These are our top tips for what to do to get familiar with Malta so you can travel with confidence!

Learn the language

When travelling, even making the smallest effort to communicate in the local language can go a long way – especially if it’s your first time travelling alone. We most definitely aren’t suggesting reciting the whole Maltese alphabet – but if you can pick up a few of the common phases spoken there, you’re already off to a great start.

Lucky for most people – English is widely spoken across the island, so you won’t find that much of a challenge when asking for your favourite cocktail.

However, if you want to show off your skills, here are some useful words and phrases to learn while you’re there:

Maltese Phrase Phonetic Pronunciation English Meaning
Iva Ee-va Yes
Le Lay No
Merħba Mer-heba Welcome
Ħello Hello Hello
Bonġu Bon-ju Good morning
Kif int? Kiff int How are you?
Jien tajjeb grazzi (M) Yee-in tai-yeb, grats-ee I’m fine, thank you
Jiena tajba grazzi (F) Yee-ina tai-ba, grats-ee I’m fine, thank you.
X’jismek? Shee-yis-mek What is your name?
Jisimni… Yis-im-nee My name is…
Għandi pjaċir Aan-dee pya-cheer Nice to meet you
Jekk jogħġbok Yek yoh-jbok Please
Grazzi ħafna Grats-ee hawf-na Thank you very much
Mhux problema Mush prob-lay-muh No problem (you’re welcome)
Ma nifhimx Maa ni-fimsh I don’t understand
Titkellem bl-Ingliz Tit-kell-em blin-gleez Do you speak English?
Ċaw Chaw Goodbye (informal)
Saħħa! Sah-ha Cheers!
Dressing to impress

We are all aware by now that Malta is about to rise to a scorching heat of up to 32°C – yes, it is gonna get incredibly toasty, so be sure to have all suitable clothing that will keep you cool, and festival cool during your stay. I’m sure everyone has their own method of packing, but the best three pieces of advice we can give you is:

  1. Pack less overall, but pack smarter
  2. More underwear, the better
  3. Pack for comfort first

The idea of this is that you will never need as much stuff as you thought you did. Be sure to plan your outfits out in advance, and think about what clothes can have multiple uses and can be worn with other outfits outside of the festival – this can be a massive space saver, and help you to squeeze in the things you really need.

Check luggage allowances

You need to be aware that you will be carrying this bag at times, and airlines do have weight limits. If you’re taking multiple flights with different carriers, check ALL the weight limits of your flights so you don’t get caught out.

Get to know the culture

When travelling somewhere abroad, and somewhere you’ve never experienced – there’s nothing better than immersing yourself in a new culture. Maltese culture is generally considered to be a mix of influences brought to the island of Malta by the various rulers it has seen come and go over many centuries. It is a fact that the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs all left their stamp on the customs and traditions of the Maltese and Malta’s history.

During your visit, we couldn’t recommend trying out Malta’s traditional dish, Thieboudiene. There are a tonne of local cuisines that serve up Malta’s traditional food.

However, our top recommendations are Ta’Kris if you’re in Sliema or Ta’ Marija if you’re paying a visit to the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta.

Always travel in groups & keep your friends updated

If you are travelling in a place you’re unfamiliar with, then we advise you to travel with your group in case of an emergency – i.e. if your mobile phone dies. Alongside this, we recommend that you always keep your friends updated, so they can keep tabs on your whereabouts. The worst thing that can happen on a holiday is getting lost and wasting valuable time finding your way back – be sensible, and be sure to keep your friends at close reach!

Malta’s Entry Requirements

Since 30 June 2021, the Maltese authorities require all arrivals from the United Kingdom to present proof of full vaccination. This must show that you received a full course of vaccination at least 14 days prior to your arrival. If you live in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales, Malta will accept the UK’s COVID vaccine certification (both the digital and letter versions) as proof of your vaccination status. Digital certificates must include a verifiable 2D barcode (QR code). Your NHS appointment card from vaccination centres is not designed to be used as proof of vaccination and should not be used to demonstrate your vaccine status.

If you received your vaccinations in the EU, then as of 1 July 2021 the EU digital COVID Certificates will be accepted.
